Hero of the Day- Father Lancaster Merrin

The power of Christ compels you!
This one is a little different from the other heroes that I've done since we know next to nothing about this guy. We see him doing an archeological dig at the beginning of the movie, and then he doesn't show up again until the end. But even then, with the obvious exception of the possessed Regan, he is by far the most interesting character in the film. In fact, the image of him standing under the lampost outside the house is so mysterious yet also very simple and very interesting at the same time, and has become one of the most iconic horror images to date. You look at that picture and you know something's about to go down. If it wasn't so dark and had so many shadows, you would look at the picture and think that he was just an old school doctor making a house call. And the other odd yet really cool thing that I like about this character is that he is so quiet, calm, mysterious and even a little creepy to the point that if this were any other movie, I would say that he would make a great villain. Obviously he can't be the villain in this movie because who would make a better villain than the devil? To be honest, of all the people that they considered to play Hannibal Lecter, I'm a little surprised that Max Von Sydow wasn't called, I think he would have done great.
